The Ruvuma Regional Secretariat reports that fear among residents in Namtumbo District, Ruvuma Region, regarding elephants and other dangerous animals invading farms and settlements, has escalated. This situation prompted the Minister of Constitution and Legal Affairs and Namtumbo Member of Parliament, Dkt. Juma Zuberi Homera, to request that TANAPA increase efforts to control wildlife. Dkt. Homera, speaking in Mandela Village, stated that the destruction of crops by wildlife poses a threat to the safety of residents and necessitates additional measures to control animals before they reach human settlements. In response, the Chief Conservator of Nyerere National Park and Southern Zone Head, Commander Deogratus Ndelolia, acknowledged ongoing human-wildlife conflict and mentioned that TANAPA utilizes stations, rangers, vehicles, motorcycles, and drones for control. A resident, Johackim Mapunda, reported that elephants and hyenas have been destroying crops, citing an example of his pigeon pea farm that was damaged by elephants.
