RUHILA: A HIDDEN NATURAL RESERVE WITHIN SONGEA TOWN

According to the Ruvuma Regional Secretariat news, while many tourists think they must travel far for wildlife, Songea town has a unique attraction: the Ruhila Natural Animal Reserve. This reserve covers approximately 600 hectares and is located a few kilometers from Songea town in Ruvuma region. It was established in 1974, making it one of the few natural wildlife areas within an urban environment in the country. David Tesha, a TAWA Tourism Officer, states that unlike many man-made urban gardens, Ruhila has preserved its natural vegetation. Various animals, including lions, zebras, wildebeest, antelopes, hyenas, baboons, monkeys, elephants, leopards, crocodiles, and diverse birds and reptiles, are found there. The article notes that Ruhila presents an economic opportunity. In 2023/24, it collected Sh 15.44 million, exceeding its target of Sh 10.21 million by approximately 51 percent. Additionally, over Sh 779 million has been invested in various infrastructure developments, including fences, a swimming pool, a campsite, shelters, and bridges. Ruhila is now more than just a wildlife area; it is a source of tourism, employment, and economic growth for Songea.
